A walk around Ischia

Ethnographic Museum of the Sea

In the heart of the hamlet of Ischia Ponte, already Hamlet of The Sea in the Middle Ages, the rooms of the 18th century Palazzo dell’Orologio tell in all its complexity and diversity the deep bond that in history has linked the people of the island to its sea.

Collected over time, thanks to the contribution of many islanders, are exhibited ancient collections, often familiar, of fishing tools, items and equipment for navigation, parts of historic ships and ferries, antique prints, photographs, ex voto, shells. Among the most significant findings are a rare astrolabe, a diving suit from the last century and ancient pieces of anchors encrusted by the sea. In the center of these rooms, are presented valuable models of goiters typical of the island of Ischia by the master artistan Salvatore Basile, at the origin of the museum's birth. At the entrance, a wooden figurehead by the sculptor Raffaele Di Meglio welcomes the guests.
